Nevertheless, Mariana Bernardo, a weather observer from Sutherland who has monitored the temperature in the town for several years, insists that Sutherland is the coldest town – and even colder than many people think. Sutherland's official coldest day was on July 12 2003, when the mercury fell to -16☌. The previous lowest maximum temperature for July (12.2☌) was measured in 2008. Last week, the lowest maximum temperature for July was reached in Molteno (or Buffelsfontein) - a chilly 11.5☌. Because of this, the weather service calls Molteno the coldest town. It is on this farm where the official record for the coldest night ever in South Africa was set - a freezing -18☌. The farm, which belongs to Sandy Stretton, has an official weather station. The farm in question is Buffelsfontein in the magisterial district of Wodehouse between Molteno and Dordrecht next to the N6. The South African Weather Service has also named Molteno the coldest town in South Africa.īut here's the crux of the debate: the residents of Sutherland say yes, that is where the coldest farm is situated - but they claim to live in the coldest town. If you ask around, most people would answer: "Sutherland, of course."
